Layers: generation + post
The two-layer workflow
Almost every serious AI musician we feature operates in two layers: generation and post. Generation is the model — Suno, Udio, an open-source diffusion model running locally, or some combination. Post is everything you do after the model finishes: stem separation, vocal swaps, EQ, compression, arrangement edits, the cover art, the metadata. Newcomers tend to think the model does all the work. The reality is that the post stage is where most of the artistry happens.

The artist makes it a song.
Stems, vocals, mix, arrangement, art, metadata. The 80%.
Step 1 — Prompting
A useful prompt in 2026 is far more specific than "lo-fi hip hop, cozy, rainy." Working artists prompt by:
Anchoring to a reference era
"1996 Brit-pop guitar tone" gives the model a much sharper target than "rock."
Naming instruments and roles
"Walking upright bass, brushed kit, warm Rhodes" beats "jazz trio."
Constraining tempo and key
Most front-runners are fluent in BPM and key codes; they prompt accordingly.
Writing the lyric first
Vocal-led tracks land best when the lyric is human-written and the model is asked to set it, not when the model has to invent both melody and meaning.
Step 2 — Generation and selection
Most artists generate between five and twenty versions of a track, then choose one. The choice is the work. Listen for the version that has a genuine moment — a chord change, a vocal inflection, a snare that hits harder than it had to.
If no version has a moment, throw the batch out and re-prompt.
Step 3 — Stem separation
This is the step newcomers miss. Almost every track that lands on AI Radio has been pulled apart into stems — drums, bass, vocal, instruments — using a tool like LALAL.ai, Spleeter, or a built-in separator. Once the track is in stems, the artist can rebalance the mix, swap the vocal, drop a verse, or rebuild the bridge.
Step 4 — Hybrid vocals
The single biggest upgrade
The most common upgrade we see in featured submissions is a human vocal swapped over an AI instrumental. The model writes the song; the artist sings it. This single move has produced more breakthrough tracks on our platform than any other technique. If you can sing — even just adequately — try it.
Step 5 — Arrangement edits
AI generators have an inherited bias toward the standard pop song length and form. A lot of the best work on our platform is the result of an artist cutting two minutes out of a generated song, or repeating a chorus that the model only delivered once. Don't accept the generator's arrangement as final.
Step 6 — Mix and master
You don't need a $5,000 studio. You do need to make sure the low end isn't muddy, the vocal sits on top of the mix, and the master isn't crushed. Even free tools — Audacity, GarageBand, the free version of iZotope Ozone — handle this if you spend an hour learning them.

Tracks that arrive in our queue badly mastered get passed over even when the song is great.
Step 7 — Artwork and metadata
Generate cover art that matches the song's mood — Midjourney and Stable Diffusion both work fine. Write a one-paragraph description of what the song is and why. Tag it accurately. We've seen excellent songs miss the queue because their metadata was so thin the host had no idea what they were about to play.
